Employing a philosophical-analytical methodology, the research scrutinizes Santayana’s corpus and relevant secondary sources to determine the impact of reducing religious structures to mere myths and symbols on understanding their <em>sui generis</em> functions (rational, moral, and spiritual). The analysis demonstrates that while Santayana’s approach effectively elucidates the psychological consolation and aesthetic valence of religious experience, it systematically discounts religion’s inherent capacity for truth-seeking (<em>alētheia</em>), normative moral guidance, and genuine spiritual transcendence. Consequently, the study concludes that an adequate comprehension of religious life necessitates an integrative approach. Such an approach must incorporate the cultural, historical, epistemic, and ethical dimensions <em>alongside</em> the acknowledged aesthetic and psychological considerations to capture the full <em>richness and significance</em> of religious phenomena. جرج سانتایانا، فیلسوف و نظریه‌پرداز غربی، دین را پدیده‌ای فرهنگی و نمادین می‌داند که عمدتاً تابع زیبایی‌شناسی و روان‌شناسی است و آن را با رویکرد «واقع‌گرایی شاعرانه» تحلیل می‌کند. این رویکرد دین را مجموعه‌ای از نمادها و اسطوره‌هایی می‌بیند که معنا و آرامش روانی انسان را فراهم می‌کند و کمتر به جنبه‌های معرفتی، متافیزیکی، و تاریخی آن توجه دارد. نقدهای مطرح‌شده نشان می‌دهد این نگرش توانایی کافی برای درک تنوع و پیچیدگی‌های معرفت‌شناختی و هستی‌شناختی دین را ندارد و فهمی ناقص از ماهیت دین ارائه می‌دهد. همچنین، تقلیل دین به نماد و اسطوره موجب نادیده ‌گرفتن ابعاد معرفتی و حقیقت‌جویانة آن می‌شود. زیرا دین حامل ادعاهای عقلانی و تجربیاتی معنوی است که فراتر از صرف نمادند. افزون بر این، تمرکز سانتایانا بر جنبه‌های روان‌شناختی و زیبایی‌شناسانه دین نقش بنیادین دین در ایجاد معنا، هدایت اخلاقی، و تعالی معنوی انسان را نادیده می‌گیرد. بنابراین، برای فهمی جامع و دقیق از دین و معنای زندگی ضروری است از تحلیل یک‌سویة سانتایانا فراتر برویم و تحلیل‌های فرهنگی، تاریخی، معرفتی، و اخلاقی دین را همه با هم و در تعامل با یک‌دیگر در نظر بگیریم. https://jpht.ut.ac.ir/article_104541_730b64f2395255c9cf859f3c85bbf799.pdf
