The concept of al-ajzāʾ al-aṣlīya (principal components) has played a pivotal role in the history of Kalām. Initially, it emerged as a criterion for the diachronic identity of material bodies, formulated to resolve the “Eater and the Eaten” (ākil wa maʾkūl) paradox; here, identity over time is defined solely by the continuity of these components. However, by the seventh Islamic century, the term acquired a distinct application, emerging within debates regarding the nature of the human self. In this later context, it was posited that “I am the principal components of the material body,” serving as a physicalist response to the inquiry regarding personal identity. This interpretation is logically independent of the earlier theory and carries different philosophical implications. This article differentiates between these two applications and provides a critical analysis of their respective theoretical frameworks.
