A Critical Review of the Relationship Between "Science and Religion" in the Perception of Spiritual Truth from the Perspective of Dan Brown

Abstract

Brown, through his spiritual-mystical narratives, alludes to various concepts that are ultimately analyzable on the basis of the relationship between science and religion. Accordingly, the central question arises: What is the connection between the relationship of "science and religion" and the "perception of spiritual truth" in Brown's thought? The present article, employing an analytical-critical method, examines Brown’s interpretive framework under the idea of "symbolism." In this context, the duality of science and religion is articulated in two interrelated modes: the “conflict between science and religion” and the “continuity of truth and spirituality.” However, the findings of the study indicate that Brown’s approach lacks sufficient epistemological credibility, as the evaluation of the primary data—upon which the epistemic structure of his narratives is based—suffers from problems of authenticity and evidential grounding. On the one hand, his interpretation of the relationship emphasizes a paradigm of conflict and distinction, whereas the interactive approach neither portrays science as the sole instrument for discovering truth nor treats religion as an obstacle to scientific progress. Rather, both domains, within a framework of dialogue and coherence, contribute to a deeper understanding of truth. On the other hand, Brown presents science as the principal tool for decoding reality—an approach which, in its unilateralism, marginalizes the role of religion in the discovery of truth and disregards the significance of religious belief in understanding spiritual reality. Thus, his perspective, in terms of method, content, and the absence of a comprehensive model for integration, remains open to serious critique.
