The Meaningfulness of God’s Speech: A Criticism of the Hermeneutic and Linguistic Reflections of Mujtahed Shabestari

Abstract
The identification of the nature, content, and language of the Qur’an is one of the key discussions of theology. The traditional view to revelation deems the Qur’an as God’s speech, while religious intellectuals try to challenge this traditional understanding. In this regard, Muḥammad Shabestari believes that based on the modern hermeneutic and linguistic discussions, the Qur’an – as God’s speech – is not understandable for the humans because it cannot meet the nine conditions of the realization of understanding and we cannot draw a logical and clear path for understanding the Qur’an. We show in this paper through mentioning a hypothetical example and using linguistic analyses that all nine conditions of understanding can be applied to God’s speech or the speech of any non-human being both from semantic and hermeneutic views, and a clear intersubjective path for understanding the Qur’an as God’s speech can be provided. Moreover, Shabestari’s criterion for comprehensibility is not logical and operational.
